SciFi Ship Concept

First I researched various sci-fi ship designs on the internet, consisting of sketches and 3D work. I will take some ideas/inspiration from each of these in my designs.

Following these designs, I did some of my own sketches.

My favourite designs are the first and second one. I will now 3D model it as accurately as possible.

Work in progress screenshots

Added some more components and the second wing.

The final product looks different from the sketch, however I used to design as a base. This is as far as I will model it, now to render it and paintover in photoshop.

The rendered image

And final design in photoshop. I used a metallic texture for the base, then simply added some dodge effects and smudge with slight shading. I also added a logo on the side.

Some improvements I could have made, would be to have made the design less 'primitive' with its shapes in photoshop by drawing more detail on top. However I wanted to keep as much of the 3D model as possible to stick to the realistic lighting and shading. Another improvement would be to perhaps add more textures rather than just one to give it a more realistic feel.

A Tree With Character

Starting my research into how to portray a tree with character I came across these images that I found particularly interesting.

This is what I came up with. I studied the structure of oak trees, however I love the colours that cherry blossom trees have so I mixed the two. The background is blue because I wanted the drawing to have an atmosphere of tranquility and peace. The tree is the main focus as it is in the foreground, and I believe the character it gives off is one of solitude yet peaceful beauty.

One thing I could have improved is how the grass was drawn/placed, as I feel it looks out of place and I could have perhaps included different colours or even some flowers and a stream.

Classwork

Speed painting we did in class. 2 hours

This exercise helped me improve with my technique in quickly painting something with colour to give it form, and then using a brush with 20% flow and 30% opacity to add depth and form. Overall, I found this to be a useful lesson and I shall be using this technique in the future.
Some critical evaluation I would make however, is I need to make better use of layers such as Multiply to add shading to the face.

Insectoid Homework

This is my moodboard regarding some pictures I found on the internet to contribute to my research. There wasn't much variety however I thought these particular images stood out and I can get a lot of inspiration from each image.
So here are the sketches that I did, not completely clean polished but I managed to portray the concepts well enough:

This is the final design I have chosen, and I will now draw it in three quarter view in Photoshop and make it look nicer.

This was my first attempt at drawing the insectoid in Photoshop; I was at a loss as to how to make its body and dress have an earthy, tree-like texture so my first attempt at this was in my eyes a failure. I haven't put in enough detail, and the colouring lacks depth and presence. I will attempt to do it again.

My second attempt, final design in 3 quarter view

I am much happier with how this came out. The drawing is clearer and brighter. I was thinking the Insectoid character is some sort of Shaman, on a planet full of nature and greenery (hence the green leaf inspired dress) and has herbal powers. The mushroom on its head symbolises its connection to nature.

Some improvements I would make: to add more detail into the drawing and delete the black outline to give it a sense of realism. At the moment it is a simple drawing with a block outline. However, this also works as it is in its own unique style.

Life drawing

Some more life drawing progress pictures.

I can see clear progress with each session and I am getting quicker at observing form/pose and translating this on paper, as I am finding it much easier to work with quick 1 minute sketches.

Life Drawing

Used different methods in this life drawing class such as drawing left handed and not looking at the paper while sketching.

Steampunk Character Concept

The steampunk character homework we were assigned, I wanted to draw an interesting but simple concept, where you could tell the era the character was coming from, but for the design not to be too overbearing.

Initial Research

Concept sketches

Here are some initial concept sketches that I did. I liked each idea, but I narrowed it down to keeping the character a female rather than a steampunk inspired robot.

Final Design

The final concept art took inspiration from the moodboard for the outfit and hat gear, while I changed the face and tweaked the hair. I am happy with how this turned out, however I feel I could have added more to the outfit such as a robotic steampunk arm, or perhaps even a weapon. I also could have spent more time on the actual outfit, making it look as realistic as possible.

Shading Classwork

Today in class we practiced on form and shading in Photoshop over this drawing. This was useful as it was good practice and it has helped me know what techniques to incorporate when painting.

Anatomy: Muscles

Anatomy muscle homework

Used textbook reference of the human body. I found this task quite difficult as I had never drawn the human body in such anatomical detail and muscle structure. This exercise was very useful in making me realize my weak points when drawing humans but also showed me ways in which I can correct myself from now on, each time I draw a new character.

Fish Mutant Concept

Classwork

In class today we had to research some images of scary/deep sea fish and draw a mutant fish concept.

This is what I drew in the 2 hour lesson. I used the face of a piranha/carp with mega sharp teeth.

Skeleton

Our homework exercise this week was to draw the human skeleton and learn/label each bone part. This was also linked with our life drawing lesson. I found it challenging at first, to correctly draw each body part and learn what each one was called, but it was a useful exercise and it has helped me understand human anatomy better, so the next time I draw I will keep in mind where the bones are placed.
